Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the sequel to the original Super Mario Galaxy.  The game had a different plot the original.  It was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo.  It was released between May 2010 and June 2010 worldwide.

Mario follows Bowser throughout space as he had once against imprisoned Princess Peach.  He accomplishes this by riding on Starship Mario.

The game was originally going to be a remake of Super Mario Galaxy but as development progressed, the game took a different direction.  Players navigate a map similar to previous Mario games.

The differences in this game was the ability to ride Yoshi and new power-ups.  New power-ups included Spin Drill Mario, Rock Mario, and Cloud Mario.  Spin Drill allows Mario to drill to the other side of a planet.  Rock Mario can smash into things and Cloud Mario can temporarily create cloud platforms.  Ice Mario and Flying Mario do not return in this game.

Players that are stuck on a level can use the Cosmic Guide.  This appears when a player has lost the level so many times.  The second player's involvement has increased and can now attack enemies and collect power-ups.

As with Super Mario Galaxy, the music featured in the game was performed by the Mario Galaxy Orchestra.  Shigeru Miyamoto gave permission for the new music.  He felt gamers would once again want an orchestral soundtrack.

The game received positive reviews and sold quite well.  The game sold over 7 million copies as of March 2013.
