Super Mario Maker is a side-scrolling platformer and stage creation game.  The game was developed and published  by Nintendo.  The game was first released in Japan on September 10, 2015 and the next day in North America and Europe.  It was released to these days to coincide with Mario's 30th anniversary.

The game feature several different tools to create stages,  Stages and visual style are featured from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii U.  Designers can choose Ground, Underworld, Castle, or Airship locations to base their stages on.

Nintendo originally decided to make all the creation tools to be unlocked over the course of seven days.  They decided to change this to have the all the tools unlocked depending on many elements a designer used in their stages.

Super Mario Maker is compatible with nearly all amiibo.  amiibo create a Mystery Mushroom box with that character's costume located inside the Question Block.  Nintendo released two amiibo alongside the game.  These were 8-Bit Mario (Classic Color) and 8-Bit Mario (Modern Color).

Nintendo has released several additional costumes as free DLC.  These can be obtained by completing a special stage or playing through the 100 Mario Challenge mode.

A designed stage can be uploaded to Miiverse for other players to play.  The designed stage must first be completed by the designer before it can be uploaded.  Other players can give the stage a "Star" or comment on it.  The more Stars a designer has, the more stages they can upload.

Nintendo has released several new tools since the game's release.  These updates have included Checkpoints and new platforms.  Nintendo has released a website that allows gamers to find and bookmark courses they want to try on the Wii U.  The website can be found here.

Nintendo marketed the game heavily before its release.  At Best Buy locations in the U.S., players could try out the game by playing pre-made stages.  They received a special pin.  If players pre-order Super Mario Maker, they would receive seven additional pins based on the game.  Super Mario Maker was also the final game in the Nintendo World Championships 2015.

The game has received positive reviews.  The game has been praised for its creation process.  The game has receive numerous awards including IGN's Best of the E3 2015 Best Platformer and Best Wii U Game.
