Super Mario 3D World was released during November 2013 across the world.  The game was developed by Nintendo and 1-UP Studio and published by Nintendo.

The game reunites Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad for the first time since Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1988.  Princess Rosalina is the fifth unlockable character in the game.  Captain Toad has his own stages that act as a puzzle-like stages.  The game has free-roaming gameplay of typical 3D Mario titles.  Each stage features a flagpole and timer.

The game introduced two new power-ups.  These were the Super Bell and Double Cherry.  The Super Bell transform Mario and friends into cats.  This allowed the character to climb walls and claw at enemies.  The Double Cherry made a clone of the character.  Other items included the Cannon Box and Light Box.

The plot of the game goes as while Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad are exploring the Mushroom Kingdom and come across a strange clear pipe.  A strange curious green fairy-like creature, called a Sprixie, pops out. Bowser suddenly appears and captures the fairy before escaping through the pipe. Mario and friends enter the pipe to pursue Bowser, and find themselves in the strange new Sprixie Kingdom as they search for the Sprixie, along with some of her other companions.

The game can be played using the Wii U GamePad.  This allows for rubbing the screen or blowing into the microphone to find hidden objects or to hinder enemies.  This also allows for Off-TV game play.

The game includes a playable Luigi Bros. game.  The game is based on the original Mario Bros. game and features only Luigi.  The game can be unlocked by either finishing the game or having a New Super Luigi U saved game on the Wii U.

The game has received positive reviews.  The game has won “Game of the Year” awards from Eurogamer and Digital Spy.  As of June 2015, the game has sold 4.30 million copies.
