Splatoon is a third-party shooter that was developed and published by Nintendo.  The game was released the on March 28, 2015 in Japan.  It was released the following day in North American and Europe and on May 30, 2015 in Australia.

     The Inklings can change into squids.  This form allows the Inklings to recharge their paint supply.  They can also swim in the mode.  They can move faster in this form.  Gyroscope controls help with aiming of the weapons.

     The game supports the three Inkling amiibo.  The three amiibo are Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Squid.  Each amiibo unlocks additional missions as well extra equipment.

     Players can post messages on Miiverse which can show up in the game.  They will show up as graffiti on walls.

     Players can purchase additional equipment, shoes, headgear, and clothing from shops located in the main plaza.  Equipment can also be purchased from a back alley dealer for much higher prices.  These can be purchased during interacting with other characters in the main plaza.

     The game features 8-person online multiplayer.  Two teams of four take on each other in Turf War.  Each member selects a weapon to paint as much of the scene in their own color.  The winning team is whoever has painted the most in their color.  Players can shoot each other and forcing that member back to the starting point of their team.

     Players have two different battle types to choose from.  In Regular Battles, the two teams battle each to level up and earn cash.  In Ranked Battles, players earn a rank between C- to A+ and changes depending on the wins and losses.

     The game features a single player mode called Octo Valley.  Players must rescue captured Zapfish.  Players can upgrade the weapon by finding Power Orbs located throughout the stages.

     Nintendo released an online demo to the game called Splatoon Global Testfire in early May 2015.  Two stages and four weapons were available for the demo.  There were several opportunities to test Turf War mode out.  Nintendo also released a limited edition Wii U featuring Splatoon.  This edition was only available at Best Buy in North America.

     Nintendo revealed that it will be releasing additional weapons, stages, and modes during Summer 2015.  These would be free updates to the game.  Nintendo released the last weapon in game on January 15, 2016.  Nintendo said all additional content will come to an end in January 2016.

     The game has received mostly positive reviews.  Reviews did criticize single player mode saying it could have been made different and better.  Many reviews also cited the lack of Voice Chat as another disappointment in the game.  The game has sold over 150,000 copies in Japan alone.  The game was nearly sold out during its first few days on sale in Japan.  As of June 2015, the game has sold 1.63 million copies.  The game has sold over 1 million copies in North America alone.
