Gameplay of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is similar to the original Diamond and Pearl games. The games are presented in a top-down isometric third-person perspective. The visual style is different then that of the original games.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were developed by ILCA which makes these games the first main-series Pokémon games to have a different company than their original developed, Game Freak. They were directed by Yuichi Ueda from ILCA and Junichi Masuda from Game Freak, who was the director of the original DS games.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have were released with several bugs. These bugs include the ability to walk through walls to catch the Mythical Pokémon Shaymin and to the ability to speedrun the game in under 25 minutes. Several of these glitches were fixed in version 1.1.2 released on December 1, 2021.
Reviews were mixed for the games. Some reviews crizticed the art style of them. Some mentioned that the glitches in the game shouldn't have been present. The games sold over 1.39 million copies in just 3 days. After just 1 week, the games would go on and sell over 6 million copies.
