The game is a 2.5D platform game played from a side-on perspective. Players control Kirby and can be accompanied by three companions. These companions can either be other players on AI players. Kirby and his companions can combine powers to form new combinations of powers.
The game received several updates that included past characters from past games. These characters included Rick, Kine, and Coo from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Gooey from Kirby's Dream Land 3. Additional difficulty modes were also released with these updates.
