New Super Mario Bros. U was released November 18, 2012 in the United States.  It was released to other parts of the world during the next three weeks.

It uses the same game play as New Super Bros. Wii.  The exception to this is the addition of the Wii U Game Pad.  The Wii U Game Pad allows gamers to either play while holding the Game Pad without the use of a TV.  Gamers can also use it to add in jumping blocks and to stun enemies.

Up to five players can play the game.  Four players will control Mario, Luigi, and two Toads.  The fifth player will control the blocks and stun enemies.  When players are stuck, the Super Guide will show players how to finish the stage.  The Super Guide will not reveal secrets of the stage.

The game introduces the Flying Squirrel suit which allows users to glide across long distances and to cling onto the side of walls.  Baby Yoshis are also introduced and each color has a different ability.  Fire Flowers, Ice Flower, and Starmen, return to the game.  Mini Mushrooms have returned but now allows players to run up the side of walls.

There are several game modes will players can challenge themselves or others.  Challenge Mode challenges users to either finish a stage quickly or to earn 1-UPs.  Coin Battles from New Super Bros. Wii returns for players to challenge others.

The game has sold over 4.84 million copies as of June 2015.

The game took three years to develop.  Development began after New Super Mario Bros. Wii was released.  It was released alongside the release of the Wii U.  A sequel would be made of the game to commemorate the Year of Luigi in 2013.  It was titled New Super Luigi U.

Nintendo will be releasing a special version featuring New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U.  This game goes on sale October 16, 2015.  It will retail for $59.99.
